B is for Balderdash

Balderdash:

“First and foremost, I want the American people to know that our experts, here at the CDC and across our government, agree that the chances of an Ebola outbreak here in the United States are extremely low.” –President B. H. Obama

Bunk:

“‘…there’s all the difference in the world between the U.S. and parts of Africa where Ebola is spreading. The United States has a strong health care system and public health professionals who will make sure this case does not threaten our communities,’” said CDC Director, Dr. Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. ‘While it is not impossible that there could be additional cases associated with this patient in the coming weeks, I have no doubt that we will contain this.'”

Ballyhoo:

ebola-facts

Baloney:

“Ebola is not spread through the air like the flu…You cannot get it through casual contact like sitting next to someone one a bus. You cannot get it from another person until they start showing symptoms of the disease, like fever.” — B.H. Obama

Bosh:

“…the most common way you can get Ebola is by touching the body fluids of someone who is sick or has died from it, like their sweat, saliva or blood, or through a contaminated item like a needle.” — B.H. Obama

As soon as I heard about the ebola outbreak, my blood ran cold. Ebola terrifies me. It has terrified me since 1994 when I read the book, Hot Zone, by Richard Preston. Death by ebola is hideous and horrible. And I don’t appreciate my government treating it like the chicken pox.

The_Hot_Zone_(cover)Of course we don’t want the public to panic, but at what cost?

Here’s what you should know: studies have shown this particular strain of virus is transferred in the air. You can get it by sitting by someone on the bus. You can get it by being in the presence of those infected.

My heart goes out to the healthcare workers here and elsewhere in the world who have been infected. I pray for them. I urge you to join me in those prayers. And I also pray for those workers involved in caring for the victims. God bless them. It has to be exhausting and frightening.  I pray for the families of the infected. What horror they must be experiencing. How overwhelmed everyone must be. My heart breaks for the pain in this world.

Bottom Line (as opposed to Baloney, Balderdash, Bunk, Ballyhoo and Bosh), we have hope:

Psalm 91 King James Version (KJV)

91 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Our only hope is in Christ. Hazmat suits may not protect us, but God’s supernatural hedge of protection can. And should we become ill, He will give us the grace to endure. And should we die? We do not die without hope. We graduate! Oh, how blessed is that hope.

B IS FOR BLESSED!

I pray for divine health for you, Dear Reader. I pray for your supernatural protection. I pray Psalm 91. In those words I find more protection than any quarantine could possibly offer.

More proof we have been lied to and that our government is being lead by incompetent B as in Buffoons. (Did I say that?) Must we pray for them? Really? Absolutely. Our prayers may be the only thing holding this nation together. But I admit, I don’t like praying for for certain leaders! It’s HARD to pray for our enemies! How awful that our own government is seen as an adversary.

And yes, we definitely must pray for the world’s sick and injured and for those who minister to them. Seems to me we Christians have a lot of praying to do. But are we doing it??

      Thanks for reading, Tom!

J’nell, Oh, I know what you mean! I had the privilege of laying hands on a sick parishoner and praying for him two days ago. He was hacking and coughing and feverish and the thought occurred to me, too. Makes Psalm 91 even more important to pray in these last days! Scary stuff, but God is in control and He will keep His Word! Hope your Mom feels better soon!

  1. It is scary and even scarier that the truth is not being spoken. My heart hurts for those that don’t know Jesus and don’t have the promise that we don’t have to walk in fear and that no matter what happens God is in control. This has definitely made me realize that we have a message to share and we need to get really serious about sharing it.

Amen, Ann. Time is short. Shorter for some than for others. And the enemy is going to fight us even harder. Like I was writing to Tom above, we really need to be in prayer more than ever, and stand in the gap for those who don’t know HIM yet. God is definitely in control, but He hears our prayers just as He did Abraham’s when he prayed for his nephew, Lot. And like He did Moses when Moses interceded for the people. We need to be interceding more than ever before in these last days!

  2. I sort of wish I hadn’t clicked on this because it’s very easy for me to panic over this. God and I have had a tug-of-war my whole life about what’s mine to worry over or not. I’ll let you guess how often it’s mine. I attend a church where people fly internationally, often. I am married to someone who works in a hospital and I am a lifelong germaphobe. Regardless of who is in power or who is publicly representing the power on this (because it wouldn’t matter who was in charge, not really), the public panic & chance of riots are real (people do stupid things when they’re scared) and I know there are some like me (and you) who stepped back in apprehension from the tv, paper, twitter feed? when they heard it was here.

I have to purpose to put this back into God’s hands. Act safely, rationally, and care-fully, but not in fear.

I’m clinging to the bearer of perfect love as our family prepares to take a flight this weekend through some of the busiest airports. I’m reminding myself that I have the privilege of being here when this thing hit our soil and not the burden of being brown in a small African town where my loss or illness wouldn’t warrant care until the numbers of the dead became frightening to those in developed countries.

I’m calling B on this, too. Our local hospitals are all claiming they’re ready. B. My husband hasn’t said anything about it which makes my belly wobble.

There is a love that casts out this kind of fear, there is a peace more profound than my limited understanding. I am crawling up into Love’s lap and praying.

It is indeed scary and getting scarier everyday, but I know that as God delivered Noah, He will protect us, too. And if we are called to go through something like this ourselves, He will give us the grace to deal with it. It’s the only way I can cope–knowing He is up to something good for me! Thanks for posting, D.L. I’m saying a prayer for your husband!

  3. I cannot believe the lies that fly…but I should. It’s nothing new and to be honest, we expect them–kinda like reverse psychology. If they say never, we say ___.

Definitely praying. With every news tweet that pings into my phone about this I’m praying.

I’m so thankful for the Blessed HOPE we have! Through it all, whatever it is. Our King reigns.

  4. Karla, this is an excellent post! This situation has been of concern to me too. When I learned about infection control in school, we were taught that during the prodromal stage of a virus, it is most contagious. This is between the incubation period and actual onset of symptoms. The diseased person may feel run down, but not know they have it.

Here is a link to sign a petition to suspend travel from West Africa to the U.S., which I signed today: http://hospitalinfection.org/newsite/stop-ebola

And I’m definitely praying! The verses from Psalm 91 had come to my mind yesterday. I am so grateful that Jesus is my great physician and protector! Also that I can trust whatever plan He has for my life.

Thanks for reading Kathleen and for the link. I signed the petition. Yes, we definitely have more hope than those who live not knowing such hope exists! I am so grateful for my faith. Thank you, God!
