Countdown to Christmas — Day 12

Welcome to Day 12 of our Countdown to Christmas!

Today’s Random Act of Kindness is one that many folks probably aren’t comfortable with. If you’d like to do this anonymously, let me know, and I will send a card or letter for you. You can send me what you’d like the letter to say via email and I’ll gladly send it along.

Today’s Random Act of Kindness

Write to someone in prison.

If you’d like all the random acts of kindness in one list, email me and I’ll send you a copy.

Besides nursing homes, the prisons are full of forgotten, rejected people. Like it or not, they are still part of the human race and outrageously loved by God. Many of the prisoners are inside for crimes of habit. Because of drug or alcohol abuse, they’ve made poor choices. Since the three strikes ruling, our prisons are overflowing.

If you’d like to know more about how to help children of prisoners, a great program to be part of is here: Angel Tree of Prison Fellowship. This beautiful program helps provide gifts to children whose parents are in prison. That’s the worst part of our flawed justice system. It tears families apart.

Today’s Scripture

Luke 2:9-14, TLB

Suddenly an angel appeared among them, and the landscape shone bright with the glory of the Lord. They were badly frightened,

10 but the angel reassured them.“Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is for everyone!

11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born tonight in Bethlehem!

12 How will you recognize him? You will find a baby wrapped in a blanket, lying in a manger!”

13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God:

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,” they sang,“and peace on earth for all those pleasing him.”

Countdown to Christmas — Day 11

be

Welcome to Day 11 of our Christmas Countdown!

Today is our Christmas Program at church. But my heart will also be with the men and women in uniform who are serving our country during this holiday season. Which brings me to this very important Random Act of Kindness:

Today’s Random Act of Kindness:

Write to someone in military service.

You can do this easily online here: USO Send a Message.

If you don’t know what to say, this website has a lot of great ideas: Operation We Are Here.

Also, check out this great resource if you want to get involved or send a card personally: Cards and Letters

If you’d like all the random acts of kindness in one list, email me and I’ll send you a copy.

Today’s Scripture:

Luke 2:8, TLB:

That night some shepherds were in the fields outside the village, guarding their flocks of sheep.

Countdown to Christmas — Day 10

Welcome to Day 10 of our Countdown to Christmas!

I love doing the act of kindness scheduled for today!

Today’s Random Act of Kindness:

Donate to a bell ringer. Drive to where one is on purpose to do so.

I honestly would love to be a bell ringer volunteer one day. I haven’t had the privilege of doing so, but I know you can sign up to be a bell ringer here: Register to Ring.

If you’d like all the random acts of kindness in one list, email me and I’ll send you a copy.

Today’s Scripture:

Luke 2:7, TLB:

And she gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the village inn.

Countdown to Christmas – Day 9

af_goldenautumn_bow2

Welcome to Day 9 of our Christmas Countdown!

I’m excited about this day because it features my favorite song!

Today’s Random Act of Kindness:

Visit someone in the nursing home.

I realize this can be uncomfortable for some folks. But just think how uncomfortable it is for people who have to live there day after day in loneliness and feelings of abandonment? Many have lost all their friends. And younger members of their family are busy raising their children.

If you don’t know anyone you can visit, consider baking or taking treats to the nurses who work there. Nurses are angels on this earth. There’s no occupation I admire more.

If you’d like all the random acts of kindness in one list, email me and I’ll send you a copy.

Today’s Scripture:

Luke 2:6:

And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born.

Countdown to Christmas – Day 8

Welcome to day eight of the Christmas Countdown! Today’s Random Act of Kindness is one of my favorites!

Today’s Random Act of Kindness:

Tape change to a vending machine or a bag of microwave popcorn to a video vending machine!

Doesn’t that sound like such fun? Only thing is, I’d want to hide in my car and watch people’s reaction. I might just do that! Please comment below if you do the same!

If you’d like all the random acts of kindness in one list, email me and I’ll send you a copy.

Today’s Scripture:

Luke 2:1-5:

About this time Caesar Augustus, the Roman emperor, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the nation.

(This census was taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.)

Everyone was required to return to his ancestral home for this registration.

And because Joseph was a member of the royal line, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, King David’s ancient home—journeying there from the Galilean village of Nazareth.

He took with him Mary, his fiancée, who was obviously pregnant by this time.

Countdown to Christmas – Day 7

Welcome to day seven of our Christmas Countdown!

Today’s Random Act of Kindness:

Wear a Santa hat and pick up litter in your neighborhood or shovel someone’s driveway/sidewalk!

Today’s Scripture:

Matthew 1:18-25

18 These are the facts concerning the birth of Jesus Christ: His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph, her fiancé, being a man of stern principle,* decided to break the engagement but to do it quietly, as he didn’t want to publicly disgrace her.

20 As he lay awake considering this, he fell into a dream, and saw an angel standing beside him. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “don’t hesitate to take Mary as your wife! For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a Son, and you shall name him Jesus (meaning ‘Savior’), for he will save his people from their sins. 22 This will fulfill God’s message through his prophets—

23 ‘Listen! The virgin shall conceive a child! She shall give birth to a Son, and he shall be called “Emmanuel” (meaning “God is with us”).’”

24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel commanded and brought Mary home to be his wife, 25 but she remained a virgin until her Son was born; and Joseph named him “Jesus.”

Christmas Countdown Day 6

17

Welcome to Day 6 of our Christmas Countdown!

Today’s Random Act of Kindness:

Make a Christmas card for a shut-in and deliver it in person.

card

This act of kindness is heart-wrenching for me. The person I was going to do this for passed away yesterday morning. Her funeral is Thursday. Please don’t put off visiting a widow or widower, someone who is sick or recovering. Someone in prison. (You can’t hand-deliver cards in prison but you can visit them.)

If you’d like all the random acts of kindness in one list, email me and I’ll send you a copy.

I wish we weren’t so busy. I wish I would learn to carve out time in my days and weeks to attend to those who are lonely. This life gets out of balance so easily, doesn’t it? Don’t put off something that’s on your heart to do. Write it down. Remember it. Live without regret.

Today’s Scripture:

Isaiah 7:14:

“…the Lord himself will choose the sign—a child shall be born to a virgin! And she shall call him Immanuel (meaning, “God is with us”).

Today’s Scripture:

Luke 1:38:

38 Mary said, “I am the Lord’s servant, and I am willing to do whatever he wants. May everything you said come true.” And then the angel disappeared.

Today’s Song:

What a moving video. Puts all life into perspective. And the absolute meaning behind this holiday we celebrate as Christ-followers.

Day 1 Countdown to Christmas – The Christmas Jar

12-days-of-grumpy-cat-christmas-1-12960-1355164759-2_big

I’ve been in a bit of a cranky mood this Christmas for various reasons. And I’ve learned through the years that the best way to get out of a funk is to concentrate on someone else.

That’s how I came up with the idea of encouraging my readers to participate in a random act of kindness each day in December along with an Advent Countdown to Christmas reading. Check back each day in December for a random act of kindness idea, a song to enjoy (via YouTube, maybe by next year I’ll have my own Christmas album ready), and scriptures to read to the family.

So let’s get started, shall we?

Random Act of Kindness Day 1:

Start a coin collection in a box or jar. Put cash in it each day. On day 25 of December, give that cash to someone in need.

jarofcash

Scripture: Micah 5:2 (Even though I love the KJV best, I’m posting these scriptures from The Living Bible so that children can better understand the language):

“O Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are but a small Judean village, yet you will be the birthplace of my King who is alive from everlasting ages past!”

Here’s your song for the day!

If you’d like all the random acts of kindness in one list, email me and I’ll send you a copy.
