W is for workaholic

Hello, my name is Karla Akins and I’m a workaholic.

In the United States, this is seen as an asset. But really, it’s an addiction just as bad as any other. It means things are out of whack. Out of balance.

The fact is, I’m just not comfortable relaxing. And that’s a problem.

Don’t get me wrong, I can be as lazy as the next person.

But when I have to tell myself on Christmas Day that “it’s okay to just sit and watch a movie and not multi-task because it’s Christmas.” I know there’s a problem.

I just plain love my work. Not all of it. I don’t like doing dishes, cleaning toilets or doing laundry all that much. I don’t like picking up after people for the millionth time.

But when it comes to my writing and my college classes and my ministry at the church, I have a difficult time saying no to it. Even on Christmas Day.

So here’s to a more balanced New Year. Between now and January 1st, I’m going to lock myself away alone and do some very hard evaluating and serious prioritizing. I think one of the first things I’m going to do is schedule time to see a counselor each month so I can stay on track for accountability.

    I used to be that way, then went the opposite direction and now procrastinate-but only in the area of keeping up my home! I’m still on the ball at work.

    Oh yeah. I can relate so well. After almost losing my family, though, I’m learning.

    Do this, Karla. Talk to whoever you need to. Make the seemingly hard choices. Set things aside. The cost of not doing it is too high.

      Thanks, Patty. I am very blessed with a supportive family. But it does get hairy sometimes. I have to be more “aware” of what I need to do and we’ll be fine! Thanks for reading.

    Please send some of whatever you’re drinking each morning this way! My frantic projecting kicks in about 20 minutes before it needs to be completed. Love your posts and your pictures! I always leave here with a smile on my face 🙂

      LOL Nancy. I didn’t say I wasn’t tired! 🙂 I stay up late a lot and go on little sleep. My husband is very patient but does preach to me about my need for sleep. I have a sign in my office to remind me — it says, “God works when I rest.” I try to remember that but it’s hard!
