What’s on your writing desk, Pegg Thomas?

What's on your writing desk- (1)

Today we get to peek inside the writing lair of Pegg Thomas!Β I love the simplicity and peacefulness of her space. I think you will, too.

Pegg lives on a hobby farm in Northern Lower Michigan with Michael, her husband of *mumble* years. They have barn full of animals, a large garden, a small orchard, and a growing berry patch.

Besides writing, she enjoys a variety of crafts including spinning sheep’s wool into yarn, knitting, counted cross stitch, quilting, scrapbooking, and card making.

She and Michael enjoy camping, fishing, boat-nerding (you have to be a Great Lakes person to understand that), and thoroughbred horse racing.

Pegg has been a finalist in the 2013 ACFW First Impressions Contest and the 2014 Clash of the Titles Olympia. When not working on her latest novel, Pegg can be found in her garden, in her kitchen, or on her trusty old horse, Trooper.

A lifelong history geek, it’s no surprise that I write surrounded by my antique treasures. My “desk” is a Singer sewing machine cabinet that belonged to my maternal grandmother, Kathryn Champanois. The old black A-1 Singer is still inside and I love to sew on it still.

To my left is a dresser that belonged to my maternal grandfather’s mother, Margaret Warner. Sitting on top is a bowl and pitcher as would have been common in a bedroom before indoor plumbing.

To my right is another sewing machine, a Wheeler and Wilson treadle that pre-dates Singer, made in the late 1880s. It belonged to my paternal grandmother’s mother, Mable Wright. This cabinet pre-dates fold-down models and instead has what’s called a “coffin top” of wood that covers the machine.

Surrounded by such treasures makes slipping back in time an easy and enjoyable thing to do.

Pegg writes historical fiction with a touch of humor. Her current WIP (work-in-progress) is the second novel in a trilogy set around the turn of the 19th century in America. The historical background of this series is the Quaker migration from the slave holding southern states to the new Northwest Territory of present day Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The first novel is represented by her agent, Linda S. Glaz.

J’nell, I think Pegg has such a lovely setting. Reminds me of how I would create spaces at my grandmother’s. She was an excellent seamstress and made all my clothes growing up.

And one of my dogs, Chevy, is almost big enough to ride, but so far, it’s not working out for us. πŸ˜‰

  1. Thanks for showcasing my writing space today, Karla! We’re camping (I did mention that was one of our pleasures, right?!) at one of Michigan’s State Parks this week and watching the beautiful Great Lakes Freighters float by on the St. Clair River. Life is good! But next week I’ll be back among my treasures, pounding the keyboard.

Oh wow, Pegg, I’ll try not to be envious! I love camping and Michigan state parks! When my kids were little I took them all the time to the beaches of those parks to swim. Such great memories!

    2. I do have a great view. This window looks out over my berry patch, behind that is our sheep pasture, and behind that is a hay field bordered with pine trees. Across the road is a beautiful Amish-build farmhouse and the old hip-roof style barn. Yeah. Very nice view!

I wouldn’t want to be behind the window I’d want to be outside it! How lovely that you are surrounded with such serenity. I crave that. God is so good to bless you so!

  2. I’m so jealous. I LOVE horses. But how difficult is it to get them to stand still long enough to write something??!!??!!??

  3. This summer I’ve been turning my old horse, Trooper, out into the sheep pasture to graze during the day. Seeing him out there – I admit – pulls me out of my chair from time to time. After all … everyone needs a carrot break now and then. πŸ˜‰

  4. I wish I had such a cosy corner to research and write my pieces. I’m relegated to the corner of the couch with piles of paper and lots of laptop boards.

Even though I have an office to write in, I rarely do, Sharon. I’m usually on the couch myself, surrounded by dogs and cats and papers and notebooks. So I hear what you’re saying! I like it much more on the couch than at the desk for comfy reasons. However, if I feel sleepy, I have to get up and move to the desk. I should do so more than I do, though. I admit to sometimes giving in and taking a snooze when the urge overpowers me! I admire you people who get up at 4 AM and write. I wish I could do that.
